What to Wear on a First Date Advice For Women
First, the don’ts.
Don’t wear a totally new outfit. Although you should definitely stop short of sweats, your best bet is to be comfortable in what you’re wearing. That is unlikely to happen if you’re wearing a completely new outfit. You should test it out at least once to make sure that you feel good in it and it looks good on you.
Don’t show too much skin. Although it could have your date drooling or looking at other parts of your body when he’s talking to you, I’d advise against wearing anything too revealing, too tight, or too overly sexy. It’s widely accepted that most men like the idea of a challenge and you are unlikely to seem like much of a challenge if you’re sporting cleavage down to your belly button.
Don’t try to camouflage yourself in something that looks like a bag. You don’t want to reveal too much but you don’t want to reveal too little. Baggy clothes, turtlenecks or heavens forbid sweatpants or exercise gear are definite no’s.
Don’t cake on the makeup. Aim for the natural look. No bright blue eye shadow and absolutely no glitter. Use makeup to accentuate your best features not to look like someone that you are not.
Don’t carry a purse the size of a small child. Purses are great and very handy for holding all the many things you’ll want with you on a first date. But humongous purses can give your date the impression that you are high maintenance and most men prefer the lower maintenance variety of woman.
And now onto the do’s.
Do wear comfortable shoes. It’s great to wear a sexy pair of shoes that give you confidence and make your legs and butt look good. It’s not so great when you’re hobbling along slowly behind your date, complaining about how much your feet hurt, or tripping constantly. Strive for cute and comfy.
Do wear an outfit that expresses who you are. First dates are about getting to know the person you’re out with and seeing what happens. It’s difficult to get to know someone if they’re dressed in something that completely does not fit his or her personality. You’ll feel surer of yourself and seriously, the thing most likely to draw other people to you is your self-confidence.
Do wear good underwear. This is absolutely not in case you have sex on your first date, which is categorically a bad idea. But good, sexy (but not highly uncomfortable) underwear make you feel sexier and that will be reflected in your whole appearance. Avoid pieces that continually creep up on you or are visible underneath your clothing.
Do wear an outfit suitable to the occasion. If you’re going to a 4-star restaurant, no jeans. If you’re going to your local bar, no evening gowns. Check out the restaurant’s website to see if there’s a dress code. If the majority of the date will involve you sitting across the table from him, wear a nice top, unique but subtle accessories, and natural makeup. If you’re meeting at a driving range, where something attractive but that you can swing a club in.
Do wear something feminine, fun, and flirty. Accentuate your best features – if you have great legs, try a skirt but not too short and pair it with flats so you don’t look overly dressy. Good arms? Try sleeveless or even strapless, but nothing too low cut. Happy with the girls? V-neck or showing a hint (emphasize of hint) of skin. Not so wild about your arms? Capped sleeves are almost universally flattering. Dresses with empire waists also work for many body types as they tend to make your waist look smaller. Dark, well-fitting jeans and shoes with heels (but not painful heels) will make your legs look longer.
Do keep it simple. Complicated outfits or tons of accessories also have that hint of high maintenance that you want to avoid. Simple will mean greater comfort and less likelihood of a wardrobe malfunction. Simple isn’t the same as boring – be yourself and get dressed in a manner that doesn’t take a million hours or complex undergarments to keep everything slimmed down and in place. Dress simply and true to yourself and then he can focus on getting to know the real you rather than being constantly distracted by your wardrobe.
